The Arts & Activism Fellowship Program consists of an after school program and a paid summer fellowship. From January to June, fellows meet with professional educators, artists and activists, for 2 hours weekly at the Willie Mae Rock Camp headquarters in Clinton Hill. The program consists of gaining journalism, podcasting and research skills, music and digital media production skills, and weekly calls to action to engage in local and national politics. Additionally, youth take field trips to arts and media spaces throughout the city, including Interference Archives, Made in NY Media Center by IFP, and Slate Magazine’s podcast, Represent, in order to experience first hand professional exhibitions and programming. After thoroughly exploring a shared theme (Disruption!), and researching what makes it relevant to them, fellows create original music and podcasts on topics they select, and culminate the school-year program by sharing their work at an in-person live listening party and showcase, which they design and curate, and their work also becomes available online.

In July and August, Arts & Activism fellows take on paid leadership roles in WMRC Girls Rock! Camps, at various off-site camp locations each summer. Fellows pair with adult volunteers and staff to design and facilitate workshops on music, community building, and various anti-oppression and social justice topics. Additionally, fellows mentor younger campers through the process of songwriting, playing instruments, and band dynamics. Fellows are paid minimum wage (plus overtime) during the duration of the summer fellowship, and receive metro cards.

Who can apply? Young women (trans- cis- & gender non-conforming) & gender non-binary youth, ages 16 to 18. Priority is given to applicants from low – to moderate – income households in New York City. No music experience necessary. No experience with Willie Mae Rock Camp required.

Cost: Free!  All participants have the opportunity to transition to the summer fellowship program and will receive compensation (hourly, minimum wage) for that portion of the program (6 weeks). Metrocards are available upon request. Snacks are available at all after-school sessions.
