Willie Mae receives prestigious Union Square Awards grant

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls has been selected to receive a 2011 grant from the Union Square Awards. This is the third time the organization has received support from the Union Square Awards, which first recognized Willie Mae’s work in 2008 as an oustanding organization using the arts as a tool for social justice. The award, which includes $25,000 in general operating support as well as technical assistance, links Willie Mae with a distinguished group of innovative arts organizations in New York City.

Session 2 Showcase RESCHEDULED to TODAY!

In light of the city’s preparations for the possible hurricane, we are rescheduling the showcase to TODAY at the CAMPSITE at 5:00 PM. Tomorrow’s showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg is canceled. We will not issue tickets for today’s show. The show will be a suggested donation of $5-10. Standing/sitting on floor; limited seating available for those who need it. We expect the show to run until approximately 7PM.

Urban Assembly School of Music & Art, 49 Flatbush Avenue Extension, 7th floor cafeteria

The school is located on the 7th floor of the multi-school building at 49 Flatbush Ave Extension, which says “Brooklyn International High School” on it. The building is wheelchair accessible. Please check out http://hopstop.com for specific directions.

Fall 2011 After-School Classes

We’ve launched our roster of after school programming for fall 2011. Check out our classes, and sign up today! We’re expanding our programming in 2011-12 to include lessons on even more instruments, plus all new weekend workshops to complement music lessons and ensemble (also available as a free-standing course).

Calling All Campers, All Volunteers, All Years: Movie Night!

Campers and volunteers from all years of Willie Mae are invited to come to the First Annual MUSIC LAB MOVIE NIGHT, on Thursday, July 21, 6 – 9 p.m., at Willie Mae Music Lab. We’ll do a special screening of “Girls Rock! The Movie, and serve up free popcorn and drinks. It’s a great chance to learn about Music Lab after school classes (you can sign up, too), reconnect with campers and volunteers, find bandmates, and celebrate girls who make noise. Dine Out & Benefit WMRC

“What Happens When…” is a pop-up restaurant in Soho. “What Happens When Women Take Over” showcases and celebrates the talents of women chefs and 20% of each Monday evening’s net sales is donated to a charity of the chef’s choice. We’re thrilled that on Monday, June 13th, Heather Carlucci-Rodriguez of Print Restaurant will recreate her restaurant Lassi – and Willie Mae is the beneficiary!

Summer 2011: Ladies Rock Camp Goes Sliding Scale!

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is pleased to announce that Ladies Rock Camp is now offered with a reduced tuition option for women from low- and moderate-income households. The program will have the same winning combination of instrument lessons, songwriting, band practice, and workshops, all culminating in a showcase concert. Volunteer Applications Available Now

Volunteer Applications are now available for Summer 2011 HERE. We’ve added a few new positions this year, including “Volunteer After-Party Team” for folks who aren’t able to help out during the camp week but still want to pitch in. Check out the application for detailed descriptions of all the jobs available. We’re always looking for more help and new faces, so if you’re thinking about volunteering, let us just say “thanks!” right up front. The deadline to apply is Friday May 20th.

2011 Summer Camp Dates & Applications

Applications are now available for the 2011 summer camp sessions. Sessions will take place July 11 – 16 & Aug 22 – 27. The deadline for camper applications is April 29. Ladies Rock Camp Showcase

On Monday, Feb. 21, an all-star line-up of brand-new bands will take the stage at The Cake Shop and perform original songs they wrote over the President’s Day weekend at a special winter edition of Ladies Rock Camp. The 7:00 p.m. show will feature seven bands, with performers ranging in age from 21 to 60-something. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. Don’t miss this amazing show!
