Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls

Bang a Drum! Mini-Camp

Bang-A-Drum-FlyerMon, January 21
(Martin Luther King Day)

8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m
Willie Mae Music Lab
87 Irving Place, Brooklyn

Bang A Drum! Mini-Camp is an all-day celebration of drums, beats, and percussion for youth aged 7 – 16 (co-ed/all-gender – girls, boys, trans youth, gender non-conforming youth welcome). Campers will participate in small, hands-on workshops on kit drums, electronic drums, and hand percussion; compose an original drum and percussion composition; enjoy performances by visiting artists; and engage in other music and art activities that explore the power of drums and rhythm. The day will culminate in a special performance for family and friends by campers showcasing their compositions.

Throughout the day, Bang A Drum! Mini-Camp will honor MLK Day by exploring historical and contemporary use of drums as tools of protest and revolution, and we will invent our own ways of giving meaning to our beats.

Bang A Drum! Mini-Camp is proudly co-sponsored by Tom Tom Magazine.

Best for players with 0 – 5 years experience. Small-group workshops will be organized by experience level and age, and led by experienced teaching artists and professional musicians.

Tuition: $150. Financial assistance available.

Limited to 30 students; first-come, first served.

A Note About co-ed/all-gender programming: Most of Willie Mae’s programs are open to female-identified, trans, and gender non-conforming youth (or in some cases, adults). While Willie Mae remains committed to serving its core constituency, the organization recognizes the value of giving youth of all gender identities the opportunity to experience what rock camp has to offer. We believe that the best music gets made — and the best social change happens — when everyone works together!
