Girls Rock! Camp 2015
Thank you for your interest in Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls! We’re very excited about camp this year, and we’re looking forward to receiving your application. Please read it carefully— there is a lot of information and we cannot consider incomplete or late applications. Rock on!

NEW THIS YEAR:
Due to restrictions at our camp sites, the camp day will end earlier this year, at 4:30 p.m. for all campers. We are looking into extended day options to provide childcare until 5:30 p.m.
Due to the need for a shorter camp day, 2015 tuition is lower than 2014 rates!
We’ve changed our registration process for returning Girls Rock! Camp campers this year. You do not need to re-apply and then complete the enrollment form — instead you can complete this one-step registration form.
By completing this form and submitting your tuition payment by March 2, you have secured a spot in one of our Girls Rock! Camp sessions. We cannot guarantee the session you requested, but we will definitely make an effort to register your camper for their first choice. If your registration is received after the Returning Camper deadline date, March 2, then you will have to go through the Girls Rock! Camp application process.
If you’re applying for a scholarship, you’ll still need to submit the materials needed for those applications. Scroll down to Scholarship section to see how to apply!
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls’ summer day camp, Girls Rock! Camp, is an intensive, six-day program featuring instrument instruction, workshops, songwriting/band practice, live performances by visiting artists, and a showcase concert. Campers receive two hours of instrument instruction each day in small groups organized by skill level and age. All classes are taught by volunteers. On the first day, campers form bands, and during daily band practice, campers write music and lyrics collectively, assisted by band coaches. Campers also attend workshops on topics ranging from songwriting to sound engineering to self-defense. At the end of the week, bands perform their original song at a showcase concert.
Session 1 will take place Monday, July 27 – Saturday, August 1
Monday – Friday from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
The Session 1 final concert will be on Saturday, August 1, at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn.
Session 2 will take place Monday, August 17 – Saturday, August 22
Monday – Friday from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
The Session 2 final concert will be on Saturday, August 22, at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn.
Please note that campers may not attend more than one session in the same summer and campers must be able to perform in the final showcase concert in order to attend camp.
Session 1 will take place at Brooklyn High School of the Arts in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn; Session 2 will take place at Cathedral High School in Midtown East, Manhattan. Please keep this in mind when submitting your application and choosing your session preferences. See below for details.

WHO MAY APPLY FOR CAMP
Girls, young women, and trans* youth who will be between the ages of 8 and 18 during the camp session may apply for camp. No experience is necessary, and you don’t have to live in New York to apply (please see below for more information about out-of-town campers). Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls welcomes campers who self-identify as female, trans, and gender non-conforming.
Note: Campers must be at least 8 years old at the time of camp to attend. No exceptions will be made. We will be offering a program for girls ages 5–7 called Rock Camp Jumpstart, which will take place the week of July 13 at Brooklyn High School of the Arts. Please contact us or visit www.williemaerockcamp.org for more information about this program!
$550 / Full tuition – Financial assistance available.
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and all donations made are tax deductible and much appreciated. Donations to the Fairness Fund ensure access to Willie Mae programs by girls and young women of all income levels. (Applications fees and tuition, however, are not donations, and therefore are not tax deductible.)
REDUCED TUITION/FINANCIAL AID
Reduced tuition is available for campers from low- and moderate-income households. Applications for reduced tuition should be included with your camp application materials and the same deadlines apply (see Important Dates). For more information, see attached page.
We have several scholarship opportunities for prospective campers. These scholarships have been created by specific sponsors and serve primarily to recognize and support campers from specific communities. For more information on the scholarships and how to apply, CLICK HERE.
Campers focus on one instrument to study for the week. Campers are assigned to instruments based on availability and their requests. Applicants can request guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, or DJ/turntables. Please rank instruments according to your preference. If you would like to study an instrument that isn’t listed, like violin, horns, or reed instruments, please indicate that in the instrument section, and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Due to the need to acquire the gear we need in advance, you cannot change your selection after you send in your application, and you cannot change the instrument you’re assigned before or during the camp session.
We ask that all prospective campers take some time to communicate why they want to be a part of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls by creating an “Express Yourself” piece. Applicants may choose any format: a letter, a picture, a collage, a song or poem, etc. Please limit audio and video pieces to a MAXIMUM OF 3 MINUTES and make sure the piece has the applicant’s FIRST AND LAST name on it. If sending an e-mail, it should be sent as an attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org. The subject should read “[FIRST AND LAST NAME] EXPRESS YOURSELF.” Please note that all submitted materials become property of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls and cannot be returned.
Please note that applications and “Express Yourself” pieces are NOT reviewed for artistic merit in particular; instead, the “Express Yourself” piece helps the review panel get a sense of the applicant and helps assemble a camper group that is diverse in experience and perspective.
Campers are selected by a committee seeking to establish a balanced and diverse camp population in relation to instrument groups, age, race/ethnicity, economic status, geography/community, and experience. Campers are not selected on a first-come, first-served basis. We receive more applications than we have camper spots, so we will not be able to accept everyone who applies. Please be aware that we make every effort to welcome back returning campers, but we cannot guarantee spots for returning campers. Applicants who were not admitted last summer will be given high priority. Applicants who have attended camp for the past 3 years in a row may not be able to attend this summer, but will have higher priority the following summer.
Upon receipt of your application, we will send you a notice via e-mail confirming that we have received it. Notifications are sent out once a week. If you have not received a notice within 2 weeks after you send in your application, call us at 347-599-0716. Please don’t call unless you haven’t received a confirmation and it has been a full two weeks since you sent in your application! We will e-mail out notifications to every applicant, so please be sure your e-mail address is correct. Additional information about camp will be sent with acceptance letters.
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national and/or ethnic origin, citizenship, marital status, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, or gender identity/expression in the administration of any of its educational programs, admissions policies, financial aid, and other camp-related policies and programs, as well as volunteer and employment-related policies and activities.
ACCOMMODATIONS FOR OUT-OF-TOWN CAMPERS
Willie Mae Rock Camp is a day camp, and we do NOT provide lodging. We are able to offer limited assistance with host-family arrangements. If you are interested in contacting a prospective host family, or if you are a local family interested in hosting a camper, please let us know on your application.
In an effort to help families plan their summers and still extend the opportunity to as many young people as possible, we will be doing four rounds of application review. If you are not accepted in the first round, you will be asked if you would like your application to be reconsidered during each subsequent round. Applications for both summer sessions will be reviewed in all four rounds.
