Willie Mae Music Lab Vision & Goals

In keeping with the mission of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, the goal of Music Lab programming is to develop students’ confidence, self-expression, creativity, and collaboration skills, in addition to building their musical proficiency. Through lessons and the clubhouse, Music Lab provides a forum for girls, young women, and trans youth to build community while honing their musical skills.

In all activities, the emphasis is on personal, social, and artistic growth, respect for oneself and others, and cooperation. This approach to creative collaboration, combined with the small teacher-to-student ratio in classes, creates a unique environment in which students can achieve extraordinary levels of personal engagement with music while advancing their team-building skills and capacity for collaborative work.

All students are expected to attend classes regularly and participate in group activities, whether they attend classes only, or also participate in weekend workshops, clubhouse, or all of the above.

Instrument Lessons

Beginning/intermediate group classes offered in drums, guitar, vocals & keys. One-hour class led by experienced teaching artists. Maximum of 5 students.

Section A of each class is geared towards students in grades 3 – 8, and Section B of each class is geared towards students in grades 7 – 12. However, enrollment in both sections is open to all students.

Willie Mae seeks to balance classes by experience level, age, and learning styles, so if the student‘s schedule is flexible, we encourage families to check the “flexible” box on the application so we can place the student in the class that seems like the best fit. Students enrolled in instrument classes are given practice assignments, and are expected to practice outside of class.

Application Process

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Spots in the instrument classes will be filled on a first-come, first served basis. Enrollment in House Bands is by application only. Applicants are asked to submit an EXPRESS YOURSELF piece to share a bit about themselves and communicate why they wish to be a part of a House Band. The student can choose how to express herself. Some ideas: write a letter, draw a picture, make a collage, record or write a song or poem, etc. Willie Mae seeks to establish House Bands that are balanced and diverse in relation to primary instrument, race/ethnicity, economic status, and geography/community.

Orientation

New and returning students are required to attend a student orientation prior to the start of the program to meet their teachers and other students. The 2012-13 orientation will take place on Monday, September 24th, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. at Willie Mae Music Lab.
