Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls

Arts & Activism

This FREE after-school and summer program provides an exciting opportunity for teens to learn about the powerful combination of music and social justice, develop practical journalism and new technology skills and most importantly, have fun!

Teen women* from moderate to low-income backgrounds gain valuable experience participating in digital music & media workshops, as well as building a podcast segment from beginning to end. Field trips to NYC-area cultural events, museums, and community gatherings will expand their social and cultural awareness while broadening their educational and career aspirations.  In the summer, eligible participants from the Arts & Activism program will be invited to a 6-week, paid summer fellowship, offering program support for Willie Mae Rock Camp’s summer programs.

Who can apply? Girls (transgender or cisgender), gender non-binary folks, and trans* folks, ages 16 to 18. Priority is given to applicants from low – to moderate – income households in New York City. No music experience necessary. No experience with Willie Mae Rock Camp required.

Cost: Free!  All participants have the opportunity to transition to the summer fellowship program and will receive compensation (hourly, minimum wage) for that portion of the program (6 weeks). Metrocards are available upon request. Snacks are available at all after-school sessions.
